Alright, I'm jumping the gun a tad on fig season, but I read in the news today that figs may have been the first domesticated crop. Ever. That's pretty cool.
Early humans took advantage of a variety of fig that produced fruit without the need for pollination. Evidence suggests that humans took figs along with them and transplanted branches to have a ready supply of the fruit.
Figs figure prominantly in legend and symbolism in various cultures and religions.
Figs are tasty when raw, cooked, or dried. They are perfect when they are a little soft to the touch, and a slight bit of "weeping" ensures a very sweet fruit indeed.
What's in it for you
Figs are high in fiber, and provide some calcuim, iron, and potassium. They also contain vitamins A and C and a host of other vitmains and minerals.
