Tips on food safety

After coming back from a lovely vacation visiting The Mouse, posting an item on the spinach/e-coli problem feels "too little, too late". And not to in any way diminish how horrible it is that people are getting ill from spinach, bear in mind that raw sprouts, melon, and other forms of good old-fashioned cross-contamination are some of many known vectors of "food poisioning".

Truth is, there are so many different things to be concerned with in regards to food safety that I can't even begin to address them.

Fortunately, there's a resource for you that can.

FoodSafety.gov is a site devoted to US food safety. You can look up safe food handling practices, learn about what can be living in your food, and even report food-borne illness. This last is important as it helps the government track new or ongoing outbreaks of food-borne illnesses.

And here a tip--Check out the site before you need it!!! Knowing that there's a link out there to help you feed yourself and your family in the aftermath of a hurricaine will do you no good at all once the power is already out.

Eat safe.
